About Mary

A story shaped by absence.
A life defined by strength.

Born in Meridian, Mississippi in 1954, Mary Naylor grew up without the presence of her biological father, meeting him only once in her lifetime. Raised by a steadfast grandmother and surrounded by caregivers who taught her self-sufficiency, love, and determination, she learned to transform adversity into strength.

But his absence would not define her destiny.

Mary became the first on her mother’s side of the family to earn an undergraduate degree, later completing a master’s degree. She dedicated thirty-six years to government service, working with families and abused children—experiences that deepened her compassionate worldview and shaped the moral foundation of her memoir.

Today, Mary is a self-taught artist and author living her golden years with purpose. Me and the Mirror is her reflection on a lifetime of resilience, family, self-worth, and finally seeing herself clearly.

Mary Naylor
My grandmother taught me that absence doesn’t define destiny.

“Our obstacles can become our greatest teachers, and the love surrounding us—even when our biological family is incomplete—can shape us into our truest selves.”

The memoir

Sometimes the person in the mirror has a story you finally need to understand.

Me and the Mirror: A Daughter’s Journey chronicles the life of Bay, a girl navigating society without the influence of her biological father.

Mary candidly explores the emotional scars created by that absence, the realization that those wounds influenced her adult relationships, and the strength she found through family, self-worth, education, determination, and love.

The memoir follows her journey from a young girl in Mississippi to a fulfilled government retiree, accomplished self-taught artist, and woman who learned that her past could influence her without determining her future.
